DIY Project Life Album 1: 2007-2008

Ever since Sal and I started dating, I've been wanting to start a scrapbook... mind you, we started dating seven years ago in December of 2007. There were many, many failed attempts at starting a book filled with all of our adventures, but they were left with empty pages. Scrapbooks also require a ton of extra accessories to make it look presentable, and cute - whether it's borders and card stock, or adornments to add to pages to represent holidays and events. It can be quite pricy in the end, and then you have a huge mess on your workspace, and nowhere to put anything.

I'm not sure how I stumbled upon Project Life, but I am sure glad I did. I might've been googling easy ways to scrapbook, and it was definitely one of the first hits. Becky Higgins, the creator of Project Life, is seriously a godsend for all of us scrapbook challenged people. She has created a super simple, affordable way to document life in albums, but not those albums filled with picture after picture... you know the kind I'm talking about, the albums that your grandparents or even parents used to make you flip through every time you went to their house.

Project Life is "an ultra simple, uber-stylish solution to getting your photos off your phone and computer, out of boxes, and into albums. Gone are the days of cutting, pasting, buying oodles of supplies, and spending hours on an album. Or even hours on just one page." The process is easy, you head on over to Becky Higgins (or Amazon), and choose a Project Life Album, select a Core Kit full of designed cards, and buy the photo pocket pages. When you receive them, all you do is slip the photos and cards into the pages, place the pages into your album, and you have a beautiful book that's  wonderful to look at, filled with your memories! They even have a digital app for all of you in love with the digital world. I have not purchased the app, nor have I made an album through it.

Sal and I started our first album once I had the album, pages, pictures, and cards. I ordered most of it on Amazon, but thankfully, they just put a Hobby Lobby in my neighborhood and I was able to score some awesome designer cards from them (can anyone say 40% coupon!). We worked together a little bit every week; there were some nights when I would work on it by myself, but it was so easy and in a way, therapeutic, looking back on our first year as a couple, and seeing how young we really looked at the time. Pictures are funny that way... during a single moment you see the situation a certain way,  and then looking back on it, it's completely different. We've come a long way in the seven years since, so it was fun to put together.

Even during our first year together, we went through a ton of things from MDW and Prom, a good amount of Mets games, plenty of Holidays, and our first anniversary. There was no telling if we were going to last though because we were young, and we would always joke about "next year." We made it next year though, and five more after that.

Putting this album together was so easy, and I will never look back on scrapbooking 'the old fashioned way.' The pages come together so well, and look beautiful. I could flip through this album all day, and not just because they bring back such amazingly, happy memories, but because the pages are eye catching, and I can feel the love pouring out onto the pages. Anyone can put these together, but even if you have the same kit as your neighbor, I doubt the pages will look the same. Every page can feel like a new day, and every memory can come alive with the help of Project Life. I cannot wait to display these in our house.

One down, six to go. Here's a sneak peak into year two - 2009.

DIY: Race Bib & Medal Holder

I am always inspired by the people I follow in Instagram, as anyone should be if they're following the right people. I follow those who lead a healthy lifestyle (at least most of the time), and these are, mostly, women who have numerous interests aside from working out, they're creative and generous, and I can even ca some of them my friends, even if we've never met. Recently I came about a picture of a homemade race bib holder, and I knew instantly where I would be headed that afternoon. I went off to Michaels where I bought supplies and thought up my own ideas for what I wanted my race bib holder to look like. Before I knew it I was at home painting, eventually waiting for the paint to dry while cooking dinner. The final product is something I'm extremely proud of and cannot wait to see hung up on my wall.

What You'll Need:

Wooden board (your choice size and shape)
Chalkboard paint
Paintbrush
Chalk
Gold wire
Gold safety pins
Gold hooks

Here's How:

1. Start by painting your board with the chalkboard paint. Do one side first - when it dries after first coating, paint a second coat over. Once dry, flip it over and repeat.

2. Leave for a few hours, and once completely dry, push the hooks into the wood (use a hammer if necessary) - you may need to measure the distance between the two according to your race bibs. Add more hooks to the bottom for your medals.

3. Add a quote or saying to the top using your chalk.

4. Add bibs and medals, hang up, and be proud - but don't ever stop adding those bibs and medals.

DIY: Memory Jar

Memories should be made every, single day. I'm always looking for ways to make memories... I don't want to look back on my life, and remember all the nights I sat home tucked in bed with a book (though those nights are comforting and necessary). I want to look back and remember the nights I laughed so hard I couldn't breathe, or when I made a difficult decision in my life and it ended up turning out better than planned, or those days I traveled and found a new place to explore. Pictures are great, but then I saw a fellow blogger, Kristyn at Creative with Kristyn, create a memory jar , and I just knew that I had to make my own. Filling a jar with memories and then on New Year's Eve opening it up and reading about all the memories over a glass of champagne.

Memory Jar

What You'll Need:
A Jar
Ribbon
Mod Podge
Scrapbook add-ons

Here's How:
1. Take jar and add Mod Podge around rim and wrap ribbon around it. Make bow and add on to ribbon.
2. Mod Podge scrapbook add-ons.
3. Add memories - VIP bracelets, pieces of scribbled paper, ticket stubs, etc.

DIY: Thanks A Latte Gift

Ever just want to show that you're thankful for someone in your life? Maybe they gave you a shot when no one else would, stood by you through thick and thin, or they show you love each and every day. If they're a coffee lover, I've found the perfect gift, that definitely goes a long way.

All you need is just a little note, paired with a gift card, of any amount, to their favorite coffee place.

I decided to give this to my boss for Christmas, but it's the kind of gift you can give any day, or any holiday, just to show your thanks!

Thanks A Latte Adapted from Jasey's Crazy Daisy

1. Print out 'Thanks A Latte' printable, and cut each circle out using fun scissors.

2. Punch hole into cutout and gift card with hole puncher, and tie with ribbon.

3. Add your name & give to the one you're thankful for!

DIY: Holiday Gifts

I love giving all year long. If I see something in the store that would be perfect for someone I know, I usually buy it and give it to them right away. During the holidays especially though, I try and think of thoughtful gifts for those around me. When I can, I enjoy making gifts because they're that much more meaningful. Pinterest has become such an inspiration when it comes to DIY projects and gifts. I usually just pin things and let them sit there, but this Christmas I decided to change that. At the hospital I work at, there were several people that I wanted to give a gift to this year, and it was easy to choose what I wanted to make for them: a holiday mason jar filled with sweets & a little bag of nail polish!

Have A 'Sweet' Holiday Jar by I Heart Naptime

What You'll Need:

Mason jars
Hershey Kisses
'Have a Sweet Holiday' Printable
Modge podge or Glue

Here's How:

1. Print out "Have a Sweet Holiday" printables.

2. Cut and modge lodge each sign to mason jar.

3. Fill mason jar with hershey kisses and seal.

For Your Mistletoes by Ivy in the Bay

What You'll Need:

Nail polish
Foot lotion
Tinsel
Small baggies
Stapler

Here's How:

1. Print out 'For Your Mistletoes' printable; I used card stock paper, because it seemed stronger.

2. Fill small baggies with tinsel first, then add the nail polish and foot lotion.

3. Finally add the printable on top of bag and secure with staples.

Your coworkers, teachers, and friends will love these thoughtful gifts, I can promise you that!
